Nowadays, businesses are more conscious than ever before of their impact on people and planet. One such business is Native Unearthed, a business creating all-natural deodorants from volcanic crystal and ingredients such as aloe vera. They're kind to skin and are a totally natural alternative to traditional deodorants. We caught up with founders Jade and Sam over a cuppa.

1. Explain your business in the time it would take the kettle to boil

We create all-natural crystal deodorants inflused with a range of ingredients such as aloe vera and mangosteen.

2. Where are you based and why is it a good location for your business?

We're based in South London. It's a good location because we can easily travel by tube to many of the stores who stock us, which means we can do several samplings in one day.

3. How did you come up with the idea?

I had previously struggled with allergic reactions to conventional deodorants. My aunt regularly travelled to the Philippines and would bring back crystal deodorants. I gave it a try and discovered that this was the only deodorant that worked for me effectively and did not trigger any allergies on my underarms

4.  Who are your competitors?

We have a couple of competitors - however, I would say that we have the edge with our USP.

5. What’s unique about your business?

We are the only deodorant brand in the UK/World to have an Allergy UK accreditation, which means that our deodorants are suitable for allergy sufferers. We're also the only brand to infuse our Volcanic Crystal Deodorants with herbal extracts, and have a comfortable shape and twist-up function which makes our deodorant comfortable and easy to use.

6. What stage was your business at when you applied for the Start Up Loan?

The business was at seed level, and the loan helped us to bud and grow.

7. How have you used it to grow your business?

We have used the loan to buy stock, advertising and PR.

8. Who is your regional delivery partner and how did they help you get a Virgin StartUp loan?

Our delivery partner was NWES.

9. Biggest achievement so far?

We are thankful for where we are and therefore everything we have done so far is a big achievement. Being launched in Ocado was our first biggest achievement, and everything pretty much took off from there. We are now stocked by As Nature Intended stores, Panacea Health, Real Foods, Nature’s Health Box and Big Green Smile, to name but a few. We are also being stocked online by Holland & Barratt shortly and by Revital Health stores later this month. We have also secured listings with the large distributors such as Tree of Life, The Health Store and CLF.

10. What’s next for your business?

Our plans are to expand further, and all will be revealed soon!
