Subscription services are hot property at the moment, combining convenience with variety - and who doesn't like receiving an exciting package in the mail? The Other Brew is a service for craft beer lovers that sees six craft beers delivered right to your door every month. Let's find out more!

We choose one Virgin StartUp company to be featured on Virginstartup.org each week. We ask our startups of the week to deliver the ultimate elevator pitch. What would they say if they had one minute in a lift with Sir Richard Branson? Please answer the questions below, keeping each answer to five sentences max.

Ground to floor 1 – Explain what your business does

Here at The Other Bew we deliver 6 beautifully crafted Craft Beers directly to your door every month, all for £18 per month. All of the beer we source is from one of the UK’s brilliant micro breweries. We aim to connect our beer-loving subscribers with new, hard to discover breweries producing the very best beer.

The Other Brew is the place to discover everything that the UK craft beer scene has to offer. We aim to bring you everything you need to know about the UK’s most exciting industry. We want to take our customers on a journey of beer discovery as we traverse all that is great and good about British beer.

Floor 1 to 2 – Where are you based?

I’m based in Waterloo in Central London, but we have a beautiful old barn in Sevenoaks where all our stock is kept and distributed from. We deliver the beer we source to anywhere in the UK, with plans to provide British beer to the rest of Europe soon.

Floor 2 to 3 – What’s the business model?

Our business is based on a subscription box business model that you may have seen with companies like BirchBox or Graze. Our customers sign up and every month they receive a box of six expertly curated beers from six different breweries around the UK. The subscription runs from month to month and our subscribers can cancel at any time. We also offer gift certificates for 3, 6 and 12 month subscriptions – a great gift for any beer aficionado!

Floor 3 to 4 – Who are your competitors?

The craft beer and real ale industry has seen massive growth over the last couple of years, so we have identified a few companies who are providing a similar service to ours. All of our competitors are very new, roughly a year old - and they’re doing a good job, it has to be said! But we’re aiming to provide an even better experience.

Floor 4 to 5 – What’s your USP?

All of the beer we source and deliver to our customers is from the UK. IN fact, everything we use to create our product is produced in the UK and the whole product is 100% recyclable! The UK beer industry has really stepped up to the plate and we are now brewing some of the best beer in the world. With roughly 1500 breweries in operation the UK now boasts more breweries per head than any other country in the world! We figured we would explore what this country has to offer before we start looking abroad!

Floor 5 to 6 – Where did the idea come from?

My family have owned a freehold lease on a 600 year old pub for the last 10 years and we have personally been exploring this countries brilliant brewing tradition through the beer we sell in the pub. This idea seemed like a great extension of that and a chance to share this journey of discovery with anyone who has the internet, an address and a spare £18 a month.

Floor 6 to 7 – How much funding did you receive from Virgin StartUp?

Virgin StartUp provided me with £6500 funding to start the business.

Floor 7 to 8 – How are you going to use it to grow your business?

The funding Virgin provided me has allowed me to get the idea of the ground and was put to use on web design, initial stock purchasing, essential hardware and a small marketing allowance.

Floor 8 to 9 – Who’s your Virgin StartUp mentor?

My Virgin StartUp Mentor is David Franks. He’s been absolutely brilliant in guiding me through this - sometimes daunting - journey! He has given me some brilliant ideas on where I can take the business long term and how to provide a better service to my customers.

Floor 9 to 10 – What’s your workspace like?

My workspace is fantastic. We have an old barn that is located at the back of our pub. I have renovated this and created a wonderful environment to spend my days packing boxes of beer!

Floor 10 to 11 – where will your business be in 12 month’s time?

In 12 months time we hope to be the premier beer subscription Club in the country and expanding though Europe. We also plan to offer workplace subscriptions for colleagues to enjoy discovering new beer together on a Friday afternoon.
