Virgin Startup of the Week: Viewpoint Videos

Turning your passion into a small business is the dream of many – what better business to run than one that incorporates the thing you love more than anything else? When David Humpston was unable to continue with rally driving, he decided to turn his hobby for action sports into a unique business that records those taking part in these sports, saving them the cost of buying their own camera and making them the star of their own personal action video.

We choose one Virgin StartUp company to be featured on Virginstartup.org each week. We ask our startups of the week to deliver the ultimate elevator pitch. What would they say if they had one minute in a lift with Sir Richard Branson?

Ground to floor 1 – Explain what your business does

Viewpoint Videos helps people to capture exciting experiences from engaging viewpoints, with the ability to watch and share the highlights easily.

Floor 1 to 2 – Where are you based?

In Buckinghamshire, and you'll find us at action events all around the UK.

Floor 2 to 3 – What’s the business model?

Action video production, and camera hire with a difference. People want to capture themselves during adrenaline-fuelled hobbies, but they don’t want to spend £300+ on a camera and learn how to use it. Instead, we will offer a service where they can hire cameras from us (pre-setup). We then edit their raw files into an ‘action movie’ style of video, and send it to them. We’ve been testing with Rogue Racing Karting in Aylesbury, and plan to make the service available at other leisure venues. We also do attended events - such as in the video below!

Floor 3 to 4 – Who are your competitors?

We’re quite niche at the moment, but any and all hire and video production companies are competitors.

Floor 4 to 5 – What’s your USP?

Our service is all in one package, without a premium cost to the customer.

Floor 5 to 6 – Where did the idea come from?

I competed in rally driving when I was 14 to 17 years old, and used action cameras to show on-board footage to friends and sponsors. There was huge growth in action camera use and video as a means of communication. I had reached the top few rally drivers in my category in the UK, but had to quit when I couldn’t find the companies to sponsor us - so I started this company instead!

Floor 6 to 7 – How much funding did you receive from Virgin StartUp?

£9,750 at a low rate of interest – is this the most that Virgin StartUp or Start Up Loans have loaned to a teenager?!

Floor 7 to 8 – How are you going to use it to grow your business?

To purchase software, arrange contracts, create branding and buy camera equipment. I will also demonstrate our progress on www.viewpointvideos.com

Floor 8 to 9 – Who’s your Virgin StartUp Mentor?

Joel Hopwood (co-founder of Capture, the fastest growing marketing agency in the UK) – a great mentor and a perfect match for the business!

Floor 9 to 10 – What’s your workspace like?

Sometimes it’s a laptop on a desk, or filming at airfields, on racing buggies - or sometimes in a helicopter!

Floor 10 to 11 – where will your business be in 12 month’s time?

I’d like to start employing the first editors and build up a small team in the first year. 12 months ago I was picking up exam results as a student, and last month I won a National Entrepreneur of the Year Award from Peter Jones CBE. I’m going to work hard and hope it goes in the right direction!
