How to build a business on a budget

If your ideas are big but your budget’s small, this guide is for you.

Building your product

As excited as you might be by your fresh ideas, don’t blow your budget on a full product range just yet.

Start small with low-cost idea validation (or product-market fit - when you can prove that your idea has a real market) by using free tools to conduct market research and demonstrate demand.

Then build a simple version of your product to serve that demand and put it out there to gain the all-important (and free) feedback.

Branding and marketing

Branding agencies and PR firms are expensive, but they aren’t essential.

You can do your own branding and marketing - for free!

Canva and social media are the dream team in making your visual identity come alive and spreading the word - all for no, or little, expense.

And if your first branding iteration isn’t perfect, remember that it just has to be good enough to resonate with your first customers; you can rework it at a later stage.

Using AI to reduce costs

Previously you’d have had to pay freelancers or hire a team to provide customer service, data input or copywriting; now there’re free AI tools at your fingertips.

Platforms such as Chat GPT can generate SEO-optimised copy (but remember to always add your brand’s tone of voice for authenticity and check for errors); Robotic Process Automation (RPA) can take on your repetitive tasks; and you can even build your own chatbot to help with customer queries without the aid of a developer thanks to online tools.

Accounting on a budget

It might seem obvious, but if funds are low, the first thing you need to do is calculate your costs, set a budget and stick to it.

Free apps can help you manage your finances by tracking your spending, and consider finding an app that can do your bookkeeping too, saving you money on an accountant until you really need one.

AI can help you with cashflow forecasts, but you'll need a rough idea of costs and projected sales to help provide accurate data here.
