Mentor Mondays: Shaun Pulfrey, Tangle Teezer

Shaun Pulfrey is the creator of the Tangle Teezer, a detangling brush that's quickly become a cult favourite raved about all over the world. Here he shares his advice for budding entrepreneurs.

"I had an unusual start to my business - there were two phases. I was a hairdresser and came up with an idea for a detangling hairbrush. I spent three years on research and design, and then we launched as a limited company.

The business really took off when I did an appearance on Dragon's Den. We didn't win investment - clearly I take rejection very well! - but the viewers loved the idea. We went in with a professional hairdresser so they endorsed it, which meant we had a route to market, and social media was important.

I think all entrepreneurs start businesses in unusual ways, but often they don't have a background in business. For me it's important to stay true to your entrepreneurial spirit and do what you do best - follow your gut every time."
