Our mentors are vital to the work we do at Virgin StartUp. They help guide our startups and provide them with invaluable advice - every startup is allocated a mentor for the first twelve months after receiving a Start Up Loan from us.
Many of our mentors are entrepreneurs themselves, whilst some are experts in their fields or work within larger brands. Here is our latest Mentor of the Month - and this time it's another member of the Virgin family, Nick Wilkinson of Virgin Trains.
Business name: Virgin Trains West Coast
Based in: London (Euston)
Mentee: Papillon Luck of ENRJM
What’s your current business?
I'm Head of Procurement at Virgin Trains.
What’s your specialist area of business?
I specialise in procurement, legal, marketing and sales.
Sum up your attitude to business in one word:
How do you make sure you achieve your daily goals?
I set goals, but allow room for adventure too. It's important to eat well, sleep well, have passions that means something to you and spend time on them….oh, and do your important thinking just after breakfast (I’m a morning person, but maybe it’s just the porridge!)
What tech can’t you live without?
A digital radio (I'm a Radio 4 addict!)
What book/magazine/blog would you recommend people read, and why?
Wainwright’s Lake District Guides….a great example of a person that had passion and vision. Simply beautiful documents of immense detail.
Why do you love being a VSU mentor?
The pure energy that entrepreneurs have for what they do… it’s infectious.
What’s the best startup advice you have received?
Start with the customer and go from there.
