How to Build a Community on Social Media: Sophie Miller shares how at Virgin StartUp Changemakers

At our latest Changemaker event at Virgin HQ, we were joined by Sophie Miller, founder of Pretty Little Marketer, a global community built on a simple idea: marketing should feel accessible, not overwhelming.

Today, Sophie has built an audience of over 750,000 and a thriving membership community. But her journey did not start with a strategy. It started with frustration.

As a second-year marketing student, Sophie felt completely lost. Everyone around her seemed to have it figured out, and she could not find a space that felt honest, supportive or relatable.

So she created one.

From Bedroom Project to Global Marketing Community

In 2020, Sophie started an Instagram page from her bedroom. Not because she had all the answers, but because she needed a place to learn alongside others. That honesty became the foundation of Pretty Little Marketer.

What began as simple, relatable content quickly resonated. Thousands of people were feeling the same uncertainty and were looking for clarity, support and community.

Pretty Little Marketer now brings together hundreds of thousands of marketers worldwide, hosts events attended by tens of thousands, and runs a membership programme with a highly engaged community at its core.

But the growth did not come from chasing trends. It came from understanding people.

Making Social Media Simple and Useful

One of the biggest themes Sophie spoke about was simplicity.

In an industry that often overcomplicates strategy, her approach is clear. Make content that is genuinely useful. Rather than trying to say everything, focus on saying one thing well.

Her content works because it answers real questions people are already asking. It breaks down ideas into simple, digestible formats that people can actually apply.

This is what turns content into value, and value into growth.

Building a Community, Not Just an Audience

For Sophie, the difference between an audience and a community is everything.

While an audience consumes. A community connects.

From the beginning, Pretty Little Marketer was designed to feel like a safe space. A place where people could learn, ask questions and feel understood. And that meant prioritising conversation over broadcast.

Building a community is about listening to what people needed, responding to feedback and creating content that reflected real experiences, not just polished outcomes.

As the platform grew, that same principle scaled into events, partnerships and membership.

Whether online or in person, the goal stayed the same: make people feel like they belong.

Turning Content Into Opportunities

As the community grew, so did the opportunities. Sophie has partnered with major brands including Adobe, Meta and YouTube, as well as hosting events with organisations like ASOS and L’Oreal.

These partnerships did not come from chasing brand deals. They came from building something with genuine value and trust.

When you create a community people care about, opportunities follow naturally.

Consistency Over Perfection

Another key theme throughout the conversation was consistency.

Sophie did not wait for perfect content or a perfect plan. She showed up consistently, tested ideas and learned over time.

That consistency built momentum. It allowed her to understand what resonated, refine her voice and grow with her audience.

For founders, it's a reminder that progress comes from action, not perfection.

Final Thoughts: What Founders Can Learn

Sophie’s journey is proof that you do not need to have everything figured out to start. What matters is understanding your audience, showing up consistently and creating something that genuinely helps people.

Key takeaways for founders:

  • Start before you feel ready and build in public

  • Focus on solving real problems for your audience

  • Keep your content simple, clear and actionable

  • Prioritise community over vanity metrics

  • Stay consistent and let your strategy evolve over time

Building a brand today is not just about visibility. It's about connection.
