The best startups solve a problem or see a gap where they can reinvent existing offerings for the better. Our StartUp of the Week, Chosan By Nature, is a business creating wholesome, organic drinks inspired by African tradition, an alternative to sugary fruit drinks. We caught up with founder Eliza Jones to find out more.
1. Explain your business in thirty seconds or less
We make all-natural, organic and refreshing exotic drinks which can help you maintain a balanced lifestyle.
2. Where are you based and why is it a good location for your business?
I live in Colchester, Essex which works well as a location for the business.
3. How did you come up with the idea?
I was looking for a change from the usual fruit flavours but couldn’t find anything that didn’t have lots of additives or preservatives. All the exotic drinks seemed to have lists of ingredients that didn’t sound natural. This made me think of the natural home-made drinks I grew up with, so I thought of trying to make them available to as many people as possible.
4. What stage was your business at when you applied for the Start Up Loan?
I had been trading as a sole trader for a couple of years and wanted to take the business further. So I registered as limited company and started to look for funding in order to grow.
5. How have you used it to grow your business?
I used the loan for building brand awareness and educating consumers through promotional materials – leaflets, brochures, banners, social media and PR.
6. Who is your mentor and how have they helped you?
Sivan Abenson is my mentor - she has been a real support and encouragement and I’ve found it very helpful talking things over with her when I feel stuck and faced with obstacles that seem insurmountable. She helps me see the bigger picture and the possibilities for going round blockages I encounter.
7. Biggest achievement so far?
Getting listed on Ocado!
8. What’s next for your business?
Getting into Waitrose, and we’re also planning on exporting to Europe.
